WHAT IS A SOCIAL STORY?
A social story is a short story written for your child to help them learn social skills to be more successful in an area where they struggle. Simple words or pictures are used to show your child what to expect step by step, and to model positive responses to the experience. Some examples could be brushing their teeth for personal hygiene, why they shouldn’t swear, their first day at a new school, or going potty. Knowing what to expect, what they should do, and the best way to respond decreases anxiety and leads to more positive social experiences.
How to write a social story:
● Pick a topic for an upcoming event or a problem behavior.
● Introduce the topic by saying what it is, and when it might happen. ● Think of any rules your child should follow, behaviors your child should do, and strategies for success.
● Write the story with simple sentences, factual statements, from a first person perspective. Keep it positive!
● End the story with a conclusion page about the fun your child will have when they can do what the story says.
● Add clip art that will help your child understand the story. Consider black and white pictures your child can color.
● There are plenty of examples online to help you get started.
Tips for how to use social stories.
● Let your child know what the story is about, and that you will read it together. ● Read the story right before or while the situation is happening.
● Ask your child if they agree with the story
● If an incident happens, use the story to show your child how to respond. ● Share the story with teachers, therapists, and other caregivers, so your child has consistent support.
